On the Market for a handheld console Empty On the Market for a handheld console

Post by Erel Wed Mar 16, 2011 2:15 pm

I once had a PSP, didn't like the games it offered. Now I find myself thinking that with the little travels I'll be doing this year and the time I'll spend away from my house, I'm going to want a light gaming experience while I'm hours and hours away from home.

The reason why I picked a PSP back them was because I was in love with FFT. PLayed the hell out of the War of Lions, beat it, and I think I'm still down to play it. But I always had it in my head about the 'what if' I bought a DS instead. Some of you guys have one or the other and I just want your opinion before I make a purchase within the next couple of months.

For handheld games, I usually like some kind of JRPG or tactical RPG. Doesn't have to be FF related or anything, but I just want to know who has the most to offer in that genre between the two. For some reason, the new pokemon seems to interest me, which is strange because i stopped caring about pokemon when I was a kid.... So mainly I'll be using it for RPGS or such. Any other games that are multi platform I'll be getting it for the ps3 since it makes sense to buy the powerful system version of a game rather than its mini counter part.

So, enough of the blabbering on my part. DS or PSP? And in regards to the new version of both, I could give a rat's ass if it has 3D or if it plays videos. I only care about the abundance of games and its fun factor coming from the mouth of fellow gamers.

Eh, kinda hard to choose.

The PSP does have some great RPGs and Tactical games. PSP's got War of the Lions, Tactics Ogre (FFT's Precursor), Persona 3 Portible (A MUST OWN), remakes of FFI and FFII, The FFIV Bundle that's coming out soon, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Jeanne d'Arc and Disgaea. The PSP does have some good platformers and puzzles but the system was made for more... actiony games like God of War and a few others. There aren't a lot of games that you're looking for but it's got quite a selection.

The DS is pretty much RPG central. Avoid Black and White as much as possible. That game is attrocious. The DS has a shit ton of really lengthy and fun RPG's. There's the remake of FFIV, Advance Wars, Fire Emblem, Golden Sun: Dark Dawn, Dragon Quest's IV, V and VI, Pokemon HeartGold/Soul Silver, Disgaea DS, Devil Survivor, The World Ends With You. If you're interested, you can try the MegaMan Starforce series but the story is pretty pathetic aside from Omega-Xis but if you've played MegaMan Battle Network it's the same thing but more 3-D. It's got a lot of RPG's, but most of them are pretty kid friendly and really cheesy.

So really, the DS has a larger RPG pool but not a lot of them are serious. The PSP has a very small selection of RPG's but they're more in your department of good story and more mature for your average gamer.

I would suggest getting a 3DS and yeah I'm aware of what you said but I believe that base on certain things it might just be the right choice. The DS has been around for 7 years now which kinda makes you wonder how's Nintendo going to support it after the 3DS is out on the market. Another thing to consider about the 3DS is BC if it's gonna have it why waste money getting a DS? The PSP isn't that great in my opinion mostly cause of the lack games! I hardly use mine and I know that I shouldn't be acting like a bastar since I got mine for free but I still feel like I got rip off!! I'll admit that now there are 4 to 5 games that I wanna get for it and that's pretty much it... I know that there's more to the PSP than just games but I don't care about that stuff. So if you wanna play different kinds of Rpgs then stick with Nintendo and if not then get a PSP but I would highly recommend checking out it's library of games.

Well, I would obviously go for the PSP. I've got a DS, but aside from FFIII, it's been collecting dust ever since I got it. Something about dual action technology that just bugs me. I've never cared for the FF remakes, 3D doesn't suit the classics, but I'm just complaining.

The PSP has 2 good RPGs in particular that I've played. Both the Star Ocean 1 & 2 remakes are pretty fun, and the Ys series never gets boring, I think. Phantasy Star Portable is also pretty fun, but I haven't browsed around GameStop very much, so this is all I know about.

I'd take Cap's word instead of mine.

I have a psp, but only have three games for it, and once I finished the games, I haven't used it since, so I'm not the best person to ask I guess. The only games I have are Crisis Core, Jeanne D'Arc, and Dissidia

@TGD: If I'm not mistaken, isn't Ocarina of time going to be on 3DS? ANd gameboy has always been good with being backwards compatible so any games I want to buy from the past will be cheap and playeable. I looked at gameboy's library as you and Amarant suggested, and a lot of them are in my department, and not to mention $100 difference doesn't seem that much at all for what one can be getting. So... Ocarina of time....

I think I Know which road I'll be picking.

@Amarant: I watched my friend play FFIV remake. I never did beat FFIV, and I think I"ll be getting the chance to beat it. As stuck up as this sounds, I can't play too many archaic games with 8-bit graphics. Sorry to say but I played them when I was a kid, now I want my games to grow up with me in the sense of graphics so I won't be playing FFIV on its 'original' form.

I get enough 'serious' mature games on the ps3. I want a different world, and with the news of Ocarina of time coming to a handheld, I just about yelled in joy.

Really, Black and White sucks? I never played ANY pokemon games, thought I'd try it out and go for the newest most hyped one.

And does anyone think Agito XIII is actually worth a PSP? The story seems captivating.,

I've not read enough on Agito to pass comment, however between a DS/3DS and a PSP I say you should go the 3DS route. As Cap said it's right up your street in terms of game genre.

And although you said your after more of a RPG feel please take in mind that Metal Gear Solid 3 is being released, StarFox is being remade and a brand new Super Mario is coming out for the 3DS as well (which is something you should for sure get if you have ever played Mario Bros 3)

Either way though it's up to you main, just try to think of long term enjoyment and future use as well.

BTW Some 3DS videos and an image for those interested

Ocarina Of Time

Starfox 3DS

Metal Gear Solid 3 (only a teaser at the moment)

I think I will getting Agito, but do I think it is worth buying a psp for, no probably not....I wouldn't even have the psp if they would have released some of these games to the larger consoles lol

Agito looks good, but so did KH: BbS, so if Square is gonna learn anything, they'll keep the story simple.

@Zack and Nemo: It looks good. I'm hoping that it does stay as good as the trailer.

@RY: I loved super Mario Bros three. And as usual you brought your video linking to convince me more.
