The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Empty The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya The-Melancholy-of-Haruhi-Suzumiya-Episode-01
This is a very fun show to watch. Main character Kyon is an average joe just tiding by in life, but everything changes on his first day of high school as he meets our titular character Haruhi. When class introductions begin, Kyon politely wishes everyone in class a good year together and takes his seat. Haruhi, the next up (as her desk was behind his) declares that she has no intrest in ordinary run-of-the-mill humans, and would much rather hangout with Espers, time-travelers, aliens, sliders, ect... In a series of events that lend themselves to much hilarity, validity, and a surprising amount of depth, Kyon (is suckered into) helps Haruhi form her own club dubbed the SOS-dan (dan = brigade basically) and the series plays out from there.

A few warnings though:
1: Apparently the fandom and hatedom of this show have lent it to being a subject of hype-backlash. Drop any preconceived notions on entry and this shouldn't be a problem.

2: The show (in dealing with "espers aliens time-travelers oh my") uses a lot of theoretical science and some pretty abstract concepts here and there for the supernatural angle of the show. (no spoilers here) If you aren't even tangentially interested in the concepts used, these will likely go over your head, but they're not necessary to enjoy the show. If you are however, this gives a lot of entertaining depth that would satisfy many a sci fi fan.

3: In regards to the first season aired in 2006, the show was broadcast way out of order in japan on purpose. If you find a dvd release, this isn't an issue, but to anyone else this can be a bit jarring. So far as I can discern, if the episodes aren't already arranged in order, it'll play out something like
[really / aired]
1 / 2
2 / 3
3 / 5
4 / 10
5 / 13
6 / 14
7 / 4
8 / 7
9 / 6
10 / 8
11 / 1
12 / 12
13 / 11
14 / 9
You can probably see why this is confusing... I'd recommend watching them in order story-wise, but you are free to take the broadcast path. The second season in 2009 is all in order (thank god)

If you can weather the craziness of all that, nothing should be able to stop you from watching a thoroughly entertaining show with great animation, deep characters, sarcastic humor, satire, action, and heartwarming moments all packed into a bat-shit crazy lump of fun.
