Driving Empty Driving

Post by Claire Sat Jan 08, 2011 1:23 pm

Simple topic, but I just started on it yesterday and it was awkward at first, but I tried it again today and it handled much better than yesterday. We all know these things are death machines, but only as far as the stupidity of the driver reaches. Like I nearly killed me and my bro when I started the car in Drive when I was supposed to be in reverse and almost rear ended my gramma's car with my dad's truck. xD

So, if you guys' have any input on driving, maybe make some of us newcomers better ones, and maybe just to tell funny stories when you were driving, then let them loose. Smile

lol, be careful ! xD

Eeee, I'm just really excited x3

In Belgium we are allowed to drive at the age of 18, but we can do our theoretic exams when we're 17 ^.^

And since (2 ?) years they give lessons in each 3rd grade of the secondary school ! I'm getting the lessons this trimester and it's free.

I'd love to learn it and get my own car, so I'm more independent and I can visit the horse I ride when I want <3

Driving Empty Re: Driving

Post by Tainted Dreamz Sat Jan 08, 2011 4:52 pm

I learnt last year so it was kind of a big thing for me.

My partner actually has his test this Monday so I'm hoping he'll pass ^^

I did the most stupid thing ever which is panicking. It's something which I definately shouldnt have done because when you get driving all your worries go away. I used to sweat like crazy whenever I took the wheel of a car and always never went too fast even if my driving instructor told me to go faster. I was worried for no reason.

I can't stress enough that you should take your theory test straight away! and don't panic about it at all. It's just common sense i.e. "Should you ever use a mobile phone when driving" well d'uh! that's common sense.

The only things I can give for tips is:
ALWAYS check your mirrors, my test instructor was always looking at me checking my mirrors.
NEVER panic! and just stay calm. Smile

I was pretty calm about it, I read the manual and everything, so I knew the rules of domestic driving, which is what I was doing. Very Happy

Switching from brake to gas was difficult to handle, especially when I have to do it with the same foot. >.<

@BLEH, I'll make sure to do a background check on the next instructor. My dad is actually teaching me, so I don't THINK I have anything to worry about. xD

get an automatic, its less embarrasing trying to press the brake gently, hold the clutch, AND downshift correctly all at the same time.

I guess I take driving for granted, wow, I never realized that so many ppl here haven't been driving for very long. I started driving when I was 16, (in the U.S. you can get a permit at 14 and ur license at 16) The first car I had was an Eclipse GT, that was a fun car, next I bought a Dodge Ram with 22 inch rims, it was big pimpin, but now I have to travel a lot for school, so I had to get rid of the truck and get a Dodge Neon, it's a sportier version so I guess it works. I drive a manual 5-speed, yes they are harder to drive than automatics, but practice makes perfect. I have been driving a stick for so long, it is just second nature to me

I started off with an automatic, but I wanna practice with the stick eventually, because you never know when you'll need to.

I have a manual simply because I have a classic Mini. They have always been my favourite cars, but I don't like the look of a Mini Cooper, even though I passed my test in one.

The I believe you can start driving at 16 over here, but I just didn't see the point in it at first so I waited till I really needed a car =P

^I figured someone would say something about it, but it's more for sentimental then for what you're probably thinking. xD

Does anybody here know if a truck drives differently than an actual car? I'm gonna be driving with my mother's Malibu someday, and the only experience I have is with an automatic pickup. :/

Trucks sit higher, and use diesel fuel.

Well Zane was right in the department that they sit higher, they also have less weight on the rear because of the bed so in the winter time if you get snow the back end might kick out a little bit on corners, depending on the drivetrain.

trucks are harder to turn as they are wider, cars are really easy, and trucks are better in snow given that you have 4 wheel drive, if not, then they are just as bad. Btw not all trucks are diesel lol, I prefer trucks tho, just bc how high you sit and how you see the road

The truck was really easy to drive, so if cars are easier, then I have nothing to worry about. Smile

By the looks of things I'd say cars are easier. You'd have to compensate for more room with a truck I'm guessing.

The truck was really easy to drive, of course it was kind small compared to other trucks in the world.
