Is the Merge Good?
Square Co./Enix?
Sooo...I'm sure we've all had this subconscious question in our heads.
Originally Square Co. Ltd., began in 1983 by Masafumi Miyamoto. Officially became Square Co. Ltd. in 1986 when they merged with Nintendo Famicom and had no success for a year releasing several games that had little to no fame. Until December 1987, they created the ever-popular Final Fantasy series, which was titled that because Square was planning to end their gaming industry with this series. However, by the grace of god, everyone and their mother was buying this game and loving it. So, Square started the Final Fantasy franchise and they've not disappointed since.
Now, the question I have for you is do you think them merging with Enix was a bad idea? In 2003, they became Square Enix and this was when the spinoffs and sequels began production. Enix was actually hesitant to join with Square due to the utter failure of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, they didn't want to join with a company that was hemmoraging money and the merge was delayed till April, 2003.
In my opinion, knowing it won't change anything, preferred the games released by Square Co and Squaresoft, after they began releasing the sequels, I just couldn't respect them much anymore. Enix has released some great games, or rather, they sponsored them, like FMA and NieR. So, I have mixed feelings over the merge.

All I know is that Enix used to be Square's rival and that's pretty much it....so I can't really say if it was a good thing or not.

I'm a bit torn on the idea, sure it would bring revenue to the company, but, at the same time, how would it affect Final Fantasy, i mean I haven't cared much for the series since X-2, but i know that people love all FF games, and the thing i think is, if you have square and enix making games together, wouldnt that somehow disrupt the harmony that FF has been in?

Re: Square Co./Enix?
After the merge, I personally feel Final Fantasy started to die as the company started to work on more and more failed games. SE relies heavily on their Final Fantasy games while most of their other games are between medeocre and shitty. There have been extremly strong games they've created like The World Ends With You and Dragon Quest VIII and IX but they are outweighed by Star Ocean, Drakengard and a whole long list of terrible games.
SE has done more collaborative work since the merge though, working on some great titles like Arkham Asylum, COD Black Ops and more.
Square Games do great in Japan because the Japanese love anything and everything that was MADE THERE. They basically hate every other game, hate the Xbox and PC and demand more and more DBZ like anime games that lack any sort of creativity in any form. Famitsu is a joke and relying on their reviews can be summed as, "It's Japanese, LOVE IT". So whenever you see Famitsu giving a Square game a 30-40/40, then expect it to be very shitty. Some we can agree are great like FFX but can't agree on some like Unlimited Saga.

^That's why I avoid with all caution of Famitsu, Japanese mags are so corrupt, but there are a few here that I can't bother to read either.
Enix influences Square far too heavily, the sequels and spinoffs started popping out the second they merged, starting with X-2, I believe. And, this is just me, but the recent FFs all have had the same feel to it, not sure how to explain it, but it isn't feeling FF-ish anymore.

Re: Square Co./Enix?
so what your saying is, Final Fantasy games that take place in worlds that look like a pre-industrial age are more fun and feel better to play than more modern FF games? In that case now i see why you think games made after 7 feel that way.

Re: Square Co./Enix?
I didn't necessarily say 'fun', but they have more of an FF feel because they started out that way. :p
Re: Square Co./Enix?
?? FF6 was pretty modern if you ask me, FF9 didn't feel all that modern

I haven't played much of VI, but I did forget about that one. OxO
You also have a point about IX, it had that FF feel, but if I say that, I will have to say that XII had the FF feel to it as well. Huh....

I'm sorry to dissapoint you but X-2 was 100% made by Square ...the game was released shortly after the merged so we can't really blame Enix for it ...Crisis Core on the other hand.

Re: Square Co./Enix?
eh back then It may have been, the merge has been good and bad in many ways.
There have been plenty of good games before and after the merge but I think some of their more fringe titles have received very little love. As the "gaming" industry shifts further and further westernized I gotta say, my second favorite genre is taking it in too many places. The people who are considered "gamers" are of a completely mindset/species anymore, and what's IN is the opposite of what it was.
The reason square is having trouble is their games are in lesser demand due to changed consumer base...
